Description of Benalmadena

Benalmadena has developed into a large resort of 27 square kilometres consisting of 3 areas - Benalmadena Pueblo, Benalmadena Costa & Arroyo del Miel

Benalmadena Costa

Benalmadena Costa. the coastal strip with 9 km of beaches and cove including the Nudist Beach Benal Natura and has a fabulous new marina & harbour.

Benalmadena Pueblo

The area located inland from the western coastal strip of Benalmadena Costa.The original urban centre a retaining much of it's old Andalusian village structure with flowers in window boxes, pots on the ground, in & in pots in wall brackets. Being located in the hills behind the coast there are some amazing views, especially from the church. There is also a very peculiar castle, Castillo de Colomares, a short walk from the village centre.

Arroyo del Miel

Arroyo del Miel. The area located inland from the eastern coastal strip of Benalmadena Costa. This area is the location of businesses, the main majority of the local population and some very popular attractions- the Teleferico Cable Car & Tivoli World. It is also the location of the Underground Railway station

The resort is rather hilly especially cardiac hill, Avenida de Teleferico.

• Benalmadena is located 17km west of Malaga and Malaga airport, the gateway to the Costa del Sol, which is a few kilometres closer
• Also immediately to the east and joining Benalmadena is Torremolinos the main resort on the Costa del Sol

Bil Bil Castle (Castillo Bil-Bil)

Located on the sea front to the West of the Marina, Bil Bil castle is both a land mark and attraction. The red rust coloured painted building is in an arabic style not over interesting in it's self but the place does usually have an interesting exhibition, event or concert etc organised by the Town Hall at the venue.

Benalmadena Marina

Virtually every body who visits Benalmadena comments on how fabulous the maria is, many say one of the finest in the world. It is good for sightseeing, shopping, restaurants and nightlife.

Paloma park - Free

• Beautiful park with very tame birds everywhere and cactus garden
• You can feed the ducks, swans & fish
• Located in the centre of Benalmadena
• On the other side is a Selwo Marina Dolphin park with daily shows

Promenade walk to Torremolinos

• From the Benalmadena marina to the headland between Torremolinos Playa de la Carihuela and Playa del bajondillo takes around 30 minutes to walk
• Add another 10 minutes to reach either the steps below the watch tower (or lift) to the top of the cliff to the touristy Calle San Miguel the main pedestrian only street in Torremolinos

Watchtowers (Torre)

There are 3 old watch towers in Benalmadena built as lookout towers for pirate attacks

Bermeja Tower (Torre Bermeja)

Located at Avenida del Alay near Sealife Aquarium at the Marina & built by the Spanish in the 15^th century

Located at Torremuelle on top of a small steep hill 50 metres from the sea front and built by the Spanish in the 15^th century

Quebrada Tower (Torre Quebrada)

Located at Torrequebrada on top of a small hill 100 metres from the sea front & although surrounded by apartments & hotels there is public access. Again built in the 15^th century.

Windmill roundabout

An interesting roundabout to have a look at, especially if you have children. Located on the main sea front road between the Marina & Bil Bil Castle. The windmill is a steel frame structure with about 100 large children's style of windmills on its many arms.

Santo Dominica Church (Iglesia de Santo Dominica) Benalmadena Pueblo

The Church is located in the highest point of Benalmadena Pueblo town centre and gardens are located on the hillside slopes below the church

 

Muro Gardens (jardines de Muro) in Benalmadena Pueblo

The gardens are located on the steep south western slope beneath the Santo Dominica Church. A small stream cascades over the rock face and a couple of pools of water are at the base.

From the viewing walkway (Mirador), behind the church, spectacular views are available from this high vantage point. On clear days the Atlas Mountains of Morroco in North Africa can be seen. There is a couple of drinking fountains and also a lift on the northern slope from the roadway below to the viewing area.
